Did
you know?
Many of you
are probably not aware of the fact that Non Directional Beacons in Canada
have a way of remotely indicating the condition they're presently in. A
normal NDB ident will consist of a morse code identifier, 600 ms space
and a long dash, as in this example:
L NDB on 386 kHz
- normal ident
When the NDB is operating
on the backup transmitter, the 600 ms space will be stretched to 1200 ms,
as in this example:
L NDB on 386
kHz - backup ident
When the NDB is operating
on emergency power (diesel, batteries), the NDB will identify itself normally
3 times, followed by backup ident 3 times, followed by normal ident 3 times
and so on...
Now you know.
